Thirsty Thursday Thoughts

Here are some Thirsty Thursday Thoughts:

The two new part-time Code Enforcement officials have started this week. One will work Saturday mornings. Columbia has one full-time and three part-time code officials now. Let’s see how much of a difference it will make. Time will be needed to see if this is the right approach or not.

Also visited the Market today. New Market Manager Brian Long was busy handing out tickets for a prize drawing next week. Check out the Market House on Facebook.

Finally, be warned – Columbia will be starting to check meters on a more regular basis next week. The part-time parking enforcement officer, hired in June, was trained this week and will work the afternoon shift, which means Monday through Thursday and Saturday, tickets can be given until 6 p.m. and Fridays until 9 p.m.

That is ridiculous to be ticketing cars that late...Quite frankly it is ridiculous to ticket cars at 7am...I swear the street sweeper makes a killing at the coffee shop each morning...Leo and Mary...is that how you treat business in Columbia? Are there going to be meters out around the THE ?? There will be lots of unsuspecting suckers there or do you prefer to just continue to suck the money from hardworking, overtaxed residents who just want to run in and get a cup of coffee on the way to work!

it's about time Columbia cracked the whip on parking meters. This is the best way to keep residents from hogging up pime commercial parking areas. This will help to discourage residents from even parking in the down town and keep the street parking open for business customers. It's only a few quarters and a lot cheaper then a cup of coffee!

i think that fridays until 900 pm is way to late there is only one major business open in this town at that time and that is hinkles, i think they should be done at 400 pm when the borough offices are closed

Well if you get a ticket at the coffee shop in the morning you must have a hard time reading the signs. It only comes by every morning.

I can't see how the Art in the Park and the 4th Friday patrons are going to appreciate having to plug the meters Friday evening. This will really make people not want to come back to Columbia again especially if they get ticketed. Until 9:00 seems too much and special event nights should get a break for the sake of the patrons.

what are the duties of a code enforcement officer, hopefully more than check meters.
there is a need for weed, trash, building code, pet compliance, abanded vehicles, autos, boats parked on streets where they should not be, etc. etc. Moved here several years ago, what is the process for bringing these issues to the proper authorities?

new to the area, can someone give me a breakdown of the tax millage for columbia borough school district and borough, county tax millage?

true...the meter is cheaper than coffee. I will keep that thought in mind. Unfortunately the daily street sweeper ticket is not cheaper than coffee...but hey....at least for a few hours each morning there is no trash on the street. I will try to look at the bright side...and just stop at TH for my coffee where there are no meters.

So long as you don't mind second place coffee - Daily Grind was voted #1 in Columbia.

i agree that it makes NO sense to ticket til 9:00 on ANY night. the powers that be constantly say they're revitalizing this town and what do they do-they drive away the VERY FEW out of town tourists with tickets. i realize they MUST have the meters otherwise all the renters downtown would park at all the meters 24/7. but they should rethink the hours. and at the very least POST THE METERS WITH BIG BOLD NOTICE OF HOURS AND QUARTERS ONLY -how hard is it???

i agree the boro should be accountale for posting ALL meters with notices of hours and quarters only-it's a shame when they replaced the meters a few years ago, they didn't opt for meters that also took dollar bills-that would have made sense

i also agree with the need to post ALL meters with hours and quarters only info

i encourage council to look into permit parking for residents-it would be a big money maker-fees MUST be paid before permit sticker is issued-either 6 months or 12 months at a time. pay up front. wow, the broke boro could make some serious monies

Our school millage rate is approx. 25.5 and I can't tell you the borough or county other than it totals about 50% of the school tax.

hey, who chairs highway committee? it would be worht your while to look into permit parking BEFORE winter

Is every meter clearly marked with the daily hours and quarters only
