The ever changing downtown

Since it was a pretty nice day today, I took a spin around town.
Here are today's notes:
* The street sweeper is running, still not its normal routes (last council meeting), but for the first time in a month or more, the "street police" are out as the sweeper is now being followed again. The gentleman that normally follows the sweeper is back after being off for a medical problem.
So, now those who weren't in the habit of moving their vehicles because there was no one following the sweeper must move them or they will get a little "pink" thing on their windshield.
* Don't forget to stop into see the new owners of the Daily Grind, 438 Locust St., Cole and Sherri, who took over last week from Don and Mandy.
* Also in the 400 block of Locust Street, at the former Nikolaus furniture building, an art shop, which will do sculpture work and glass molding is preparing to open.
* Down the street, Viola's Bees, an art shop in the former Flowers, Herbs and Art, which I disclosed last week or week before, has closed, because of a family health issue.
* Across the street, at Fourth and Locust street, the denim clothing store and fleamarket in a building owned by David Doolittle is now vacant.
* Also, don't forget the annual Mardi Gras Parade on Thursday.

nothing's changing downtown - stores come and stores go because they can't make enough money to get excited about staying! - and for other valid reasons - but the bottom line is if they were making good money they would find a way to stay open!

Nobody wants to run a business downtown while drug transactions are taking place in plain view. Then when you notify the police, they do nothing about it. What a shame....This town will never move forward.

I heard violas bees closed because of health reasons..did anyone see the big hole in her ceiling that ran water down on her good merchandise-water leads to mold. She was a nice a lady and someone that the town needed. why isn't landlords held accountable in this town??

I think the town has improved over the last couple of years as far as stores go. However yes...it is very hard for a store to stay open with mostly poor people trying to support it. Our town does not need new streets and new sidewalks and new trees and all new paint on buildings. Look at New York City, terrible drugs , thugs and crap all over the streets yet people still go there. What Columbia needs is jobs that pay more than minimum wage so people will want to come here.

I know that is easier said than done. You have to start one place at a time and get some office space filled and some retail space filled and it builds slow but sure. The boro should look at more ways to get these businesses and non-poor people to come to Columbia to live and work.

Does David Doolittle still own that building? I saw that Jennifer had sued him because he defaulted (BIG TIME) on the mortgage terms and conditions. He originally had 1 year to pay her in full but didn't actually make a single payment for like 18 months then he didn't pay the taxes either. He is shameful!!

to the contrary, I heard that he paid Jennifer in full plus interest and all taxes??

Okay "to the contrary". What I posted was fact off of the Lancaster Prothonotary's web site. All of this was in the complaint filed by Jennifer herself. Maybe since then he has paid but at the time she filed in 2009 he had not paid. He is still shameful!!

I confirmed it Izzy - Jennifer was paid in full plus ALL back interest and ALL legal fees !
