Columbia Borough has issued a warning for those who have out chairs, tables, trash cans, etc. out to save parking spaces from the snow a few weeks back. The public works department will be going around town removing the items.

Why not make all the apartment houses have private parking and we would not have to worry about spots. They do not want to shovel a parking spot but they want to park in your spot. One apartment building in town has 6 - 8 cars to 1 house and NOT one of them shoveled a spot for their cars. So get on these slum lords and we would not have problems.
I agree, it is time for the chairs to go, and I have no problem with the street department doing it. I can understand saving your spot after a major snow storm but there comes a time when it is no longer reasonable to continue saving it. There must be eight to ten "space savers" in my block alone. Most of the snow is gone or nearly gone so there is no need to save spaces any longer.

even if there was parking permits, you are not guaranteed a space. Most places that I can think of (mostly college towns near here) have general parking zones. So someone else with a parking permit can still park on the public street in front of your home.
Sucks, but that is what happens when you turn single homes built before the era of the automobile into multi-resident apartments.
This entire "parking permit" idea has me puzzled. Just where would these parking permits apply, just downtown or all over town. Imagine having permit parking all over town. The cost of the signs would be outrageous and think of the time and cost to enforce them. Guess that it why you do not see them except in the most largest cities, and then, only where they are needed. Just sounds like a stupid idea with very little thought put into it.
By the way, if you park in the spot I shoveled, unless it is for a short period of time, shortly after it snowed, expect to see me shoveling your car back in.
chairs are a tradition and we're all about tradition. my parents did it and my grandparents did it. that gives me grandfather clause to shovel my spot and block it with pops chair if i want to - and not you or the powers that be are going to ever be able to stop this gold old tradition, just face it.

Nope. I shoveled the equivalent of 5 spaces the last snow. 2 for my trucks, 1 for another car, 1 for a spare, and the amount of space between the aforementioned spaces probably equals one additional space. Granted I didn't shovel out too much under my slightly larger truck, but it's the thought that counts.
I pay taxes too. I have two trucks - both properly registered and insured. If you want your own private reserved space, then buy a house with a driveway/garage/parking spot. Or move to a neighborhood that isn't jammed pack with row homes and multifamily apartments. Why do you feel the need to have your own piece of the public street for your car? Lancaster has permit parking - but it is not space-specific. Could you even imagine the logistics behind a system like that?

I just bought my first home in Columbia this summer. It is a row home. I never even got the chance to park infront of my house because I worked til five and came home to have a chair infront of my house. The people next to me rent and they are who put the chair there. It hasn't moved since. I had to shovel out three spots since then because I refuse to put a chair out. It's not fair! If everyone would just shovel out a spot and park ONE of the many cars infront of their home everyone would have a spot to come home too. But that isn't the case and I'm sick of walking a block to my home to have a rental continue to park there.
Interesting...lancaster news ran a story about the city ordering chairs to be removed this morning. I understand the parking problems caused by snow but let's not act like we are the victims of some huge injustice, or that somehow this only happens here and that our officials are somehow wasting our money. Afterall, the reason for bringing in the chairs is to make snow removal easier and lord knows we are all throw our hands up and scream about plowing every time it snows.

I see that people that live in the 100 block of S. 4th Street must not have seen the notice...I counted 14 chairs there around noon today in that block alone! Now don't get me wrong, I myself use a chair to save my spot, but it was removed at least over a week ago....those chairs are basically sitting on bare streets now...thats a little ridiculous

So riddle me this. You want the homeowner to OWN the spot. OK, what happens if a utility company needs to perform work under the street? What happens when the street needs repaired? I guess the homeowner would be responsible for the pavement. Have you priced asphalt lately?
Or do you expect the borough to repair your property for free (or on the backs of the taxpayers)? Maybe the borough should put the parking spaces up for bid. Maximum profit that way. Of course you may be outbid and have to park 4 blocks away, but it would make great financial sense.

I live on a block where on the other side of the street six houses and there are 14 cars for those six houses. Two of the cars are never moved, so it is not good. There are also cars parked on the block who live on another street, where there is plenty of parking. I agree with the one post, when a large majority of our streets were constructed, people didn't have two or even three cars. As for the rental units, they shouldn't be grandfathered. They all should have off-street parking and are the lazy ones, who are bums, don't work, use their welfare money to purchase cigs, lottery tickets and booze. And as far as the borough's request, its an ordinance and it is time. But then again, since we have selective enforcement, not surprised by this.
yeah park spaces required for rentals would be nice, problem is our apts next door have 2 in the back yard and they never use them. So who is gonna enforce the tenants to actually use them?

I saw 3 police cruisers at a house in the 100 block of South 4th Street on Friday afternoon - a few doors down towards Union St. a person pulled out of their parking spot, got out and placed a chair in his spot - clearly in view of the police officer(s). So apparently this is all a big joke because everyone knows the police won't enforce it. I was appalled he did it in plain view of the cruisers.

all parking spots should be deeded and sold to the adjoining property and that way the property owners can pay for the maintainance on half the roads

as i've said numerous times, the parking space infront of each homeowners property should be a part of the property and for the property owner not the lazy neighbor (who has 4 cars). the property owner MUST pay taxes on this, the taxpaying homeowner is RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL UPKEEP ON THE SIDEWALK AND CURB AREA AND HALFWAY TO THE STREET -SO THEREFORE-IT SHOULD BE THE HOMEOWNERS !!!!!!!! how hard is it ???? if i pay the exorbitant taxes on this property (almost
$ 5,000 PER year -the least theboro could do is adjust the ordinance that states that the space is for the owner of said property. (It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure it out!)

I see that people that live in the 100 block of S. 4th Street must not have seen the notice...I counted 14 chairs there around noon today in that block alone! Now don't get me wrong, I myself use a chair to save my spot, but it was removed at least over a week ago....those chairs are basically sitting on bare streets now...thats a little ridiculous

So riddle me this. You want the homeowner to OWN the spot. OK, what happens if a utility company needs to perform work under the street? What happens when the street needs repaired? I guess the homeowner would be responsible for the pavement. Have you priced asphalt lately?
Or do you expect the borough to repair your property for free (or on the backs of the taxpayers)? Maybe the borough should put the parking spaces up for bid. Maximum profit that way. Of course you may be outbid and have to park 4 blocks away, but it would make great financial sense.
solution, all apply for physical handicap signs in front of your house, I did and have no parking problems

yes that is true Tom, but if my neighbor has a handicap placard why would he want to park in my spot? It is not disrespectiful for those truly handicapped only disrespecttiful to those with a placard who aren't handicapped, know anyone like that? Soon the snow season will be over what will you bitch about then?
I live on a block where on the other side of the street six houses and there are 14 cars for those six houses. Two of the cars are never moved, so it is not good. There are also cars parked on the block who live on another street, where there is plenty of parking. I agree with the one post, when a large majority of our streets were constructed, people didn't have two or even three cars. As for the rental units, they shouldn't be grandfathered. They all should have off-street parking and are the lazy ones, who are bums, don't work, use their welfare money to purchase cigs, lottery tickets and booze. And as far as the borough's request, its an ordinance and it is time. But then again, since we have selective enforcement, not surprised by this.
yeah park spaces required for rentals would be nice, problem is our apts next door have 2 in the back yard and they never use them. So who is gonna enforce the tenants to actually use them?

I saw 3 police cruisers at a house in the 100 block of South 4th Street on Friday afternoon - a few doors down towards Union St. a person pulled out of their parking spot, got out and placed a chair in his spot - clearly in view of the police officer(s). So apparently this is all a big joke because everyone knows the police won't enforce it. I was appalled he did it in plain view of the cruisers.
