National Night Out

West Hempfield Township Police will be joining cities nationwide for “America’s Night Out Against Crime”. The police department will be hosting a kick-off event on Sunday, July 31, at the Mountville Borough Community Park between 5-8 p.m. Personnel and equipment from all of the emergency services will be on hand so that the public can have the opportunity to see their vehicles and equipment. Scheduled to be on hand are the police departments from West Hempfield Township, Columbia Borough, and East Hempfield Township along with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit. The Sheriff’s Department will also be giving demonstrations.

Other emergency services that will be in attendance include fire companies from Mountville Borough, West Hempfield, Susquehanna Valley Emergency Medical Services; Lancaster County Parks bike patrol; and Lancaster County Fireman’s Association smoke house.
"This will be a great opportunity for the public to come out and see what emergency services in our area have to offer.” stated Chief Mark Pugliese. “They will be able to go through vehicles, look at equipment and talk to all of the emergency responders. Last year was our first National Night Out event and thanks to the community as well as all of our emergency service providers it was a huge success. We are looking forward to this year’s event.
The police department will then be encouraging everyone to take part in America’s Night Out Against Crime which will be taking place on Tuesday, Aug. 2, which is when neighborhoods throughout West Hempfield Township and Mountville Borough are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 28th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the West Hempfield Township Police Department will involve over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 37 million people are expected to participate. National Night Out is being supported in part by Target, a national corporate sponsor.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten Crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 7 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 2, residents in neighborhoods throughout Mountville Borough, West Hempfield Township and across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with their neighbors

West Hempfield Police

A juvenile was charged with burglary, theft, conspiracy and turned over to youth detention authorities as the result of an incident in the 700 block of Westover Drive, June 9.
Police were called to the area for a report of three black males on mini bikes armed with rifles. When police arrive, the suspects fled on foot. Police were able to determine that the mini-bikes were stolen from the 700 block of Oxford Drive and a bike from the 3600 block of Peregrine Circle. The juvenile was charged in connection with the Oxford Drive incident.

Police are also investigating the theft of 10-12 feet of copper wire from St. Paul's United Methodist Church, June 10.

Police are looking for a white male with spiked hair and wearing big glasses in connection with an incident in the first block of East Main Street, Mountville, June 8.
The suspect, who might be named Eric, police said, attempted to approach and speak to several 10-year-old girls, who were scared and fled the area.

A 33-year-old Pequea mn is in Lancaster County Prison following his arrest as the result of a disturbance call in West Hempfield Township, May 30.
John E. Heiselman, 33, was charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threats as the result of an incident in the 3800 block of Hillcrest Drive. Police said he attempted to bite off the finger of another man.
He was placed in LCP in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Dillon Carter Schmidt, 24, of Lancaster, was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and possession of drug parphernalia and placed in Lancaster County Prison, as the result of an incident at the Getty Mart, May 21.

Police are investigating the theft of 250 pounds of copper wire, valued at $1,800 from Micro-Fracture in the 200 block of North Donnerville Road, Jan. 27.
Police report a window was broken out of a home by a thrown snowball in the first block of East Main Street, Mountville, Jan.27.

Police have charged Nicholas M. Swedish, 32, of Carnegie, with receiving stolen property as the result of an incident on Route 462 at Prospect Road, Jan. 28.
Police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle and found the suspect in the vehicle reported stolen from Collier Township, Allegheny County.

Police reported a window was broken out by a BB gun in the 700 block of Prospect Road, Jan. 29.

Police reported officials of the Getty Mart in the 300 block of Highland Drive reported windows were smashed out but no entry was gained to the building, Jan. 28.

Police have charged Scott Greenawalt, 51, of Mountville with public drunkenness as the result of an incident on Huntington Drive, Jan. 29.

Adam Sinners, 23, of Lancaster, was placed in Lancaster County Prison as the result of an incident in the 700 block of Kayo Avenue, Jan. 29.
He was charged after being stopped for driving without headlights on his vehicle. He was charged with DUI, two counts of an Act 64 drug violation, prohibited weapons and driving without headlights.
Sinners was found in possession of an illegal weapon, drugs and drug paraphernalia and became combative with police.

West Hempfield Township Police have charged Stephen Fedula, 50, of Landisville, with retail theft as the result of an incident at the Kmart, 3975 Columbia Ave., at 9:57 a.m., March 30.


He attempted to leave the store with DVDs and food valued at $45.

Police report vandalism

West Hempfield Township Police are investigating several incidents in the 600 and 700 block of South 16th Street where locks were cut off sheds and the sheds were entered between March 22 and 24.
During the evening hours, one victim reported the theft of a Stihl chain saw and another had several gallons of gas taken.
Police said most were just rummaged through.
