River search is under way

Water rescue crews from Lancaster County and local police are searching the Susquehanna River for a person, who jumped off one of the bridges connecting Columbia and Wrightsville tonight around 8:30 p.m.
Reportedly police were attempting to talk a person out of jumping and the person jumped.

A look back at history

This is what we accomplished in 2010 at Columbia High School in softball:

- First winning season in school history (13-7). Also, obviously, school record for wins. This is the 26th season of softball at Columbia.

- Will make school's first-ever post season appearance in District III Class AA tourney.

- Largest turnaround in the Lancaster-Lebanon League this season - went from 4 wins in 2009 to 13 (+9); next closest is Conestoga Valley, which went from 10 to 15 (+5).

- Highest Section 4 finish (3rd) since 1995 - also 3rd. That season was previously the best in school history culminating with a 7-9 mark.

 From 2005-2009, a total of 5 seasons - Columbia went 13-76 in softball - we went 13-7 this season.

- 5 times in school history team went winless in a season; 11 times it only one won game. - All-time record heading into this season: 36-346

- Best League record in school history (10-6)

- Best record in Section 4 play in school history (7-3)

- Best record in Section 3/4 crossover games in school history (3-3)

- Best home record in school history (8-3)

- First-ever winning record in road games (5-4)

Three players earned L-L League Section 4 first-team all-star honors: Emily Detz (Jr., pitcher); Allison Michener (Sr., SS); Ashlyn Phillips (Fr., catcher).

Help is needed

Columbia High School is is actively looking for help at the concession stand for home football games for the upcoming season. 

They are seeking 14 to 16 volunteers per game. If anyone is interested, please contact Deb Nissley at dnissley@columbia.k12.pa.us

Settlement is delayed again

What has become common place in Columbia, settlement on the borough-owned property at Third and Linden streets, that is to become the Turkey Hill Experience, has been delayed yet again.
Settlement between the borough, the Columbia Econonic Development Corporation and Musuem Partners has been delayed because of the bank financing the project, Susquehanna Bank, needed 10 days from the time they received all of the signed documents to review them.
Settlement may occur later this month, or borough council might have to have a special meeting to extend its agreement into the first few days of June.
The project is still a go, once the bank, agrees to everything.

Trailer Dog to sponsor breakfast

Trailer Dog, LLC, will be the sponsor for a Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Comerce Breakfast on Tuesday, May 25.
The breakfast will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the Columbia United Methodist Church, Fifth and Walnut streets.
The program begins at 7:45 a.m.
Brian Roche of WGAL will speak on electric choice and rate caps.
The meetingis free for SVCC members and $10 for non-members.

Columbia's Memorial Day Parade/Observance is Sunday

Columbia will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade and Observance on Sunday, May 23.
The event begins at 1 p.m. May 23 with a ceremony at Locust Street Park at Locust and Sixth streets.
At 2:30, the parade will begin at the 10th and Manor streets end at Locust and Sixth streets.
This year marks the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. It's also the 35th anniversary of the end of the war in Vietnam, plus the 20th anniversary of the start of the Persian Gulf War in 1990.
The parade will feature floats, honor guard, color guard and six divisions of marchers (each with a band).
The speaker will be Commander Gerard Gunari from Luzerne County, an Army veteran who served three tours of duty in Europe during the Cold War and who worked to defuse land mines during the Gulf War.

Yard Sale

There will be a yard sale Saturday, May 22 at 8 a.m. at 21 North Ninth Streeet.

Who is Tulpehocken?

When the Columbia girls' softball team plays its first ever District Three Class AA playoff game next Tuesday at Garrett Park in Willow Street, they will face a team that lost six of its last nine games.
Meet the Tulpehocken Lady Trojans.
Coach John Gilmer's team finished with an 8-5 record in Division IV of the Berks County League and are 9-7 overall.
The Trojans qualified for the Berks County League playoffs for the first time since 1989 with a second place finish in Division IV and promptly lost to Muhlenberg, 5-1 in the first round.
The loss was the third straight  by the Lady Trojans.
Tulpehocken startred the year hot, winning their first four gamews over Antieta (23-0), Holy Name (10-0), Reading Central Catholic (7-1 and Wyomissing (12-2). The team's first loss was a crushing 16-6 loss to Kutztown.
For the season, the Lady Trojans did not score a win over a team with a winning record.
Reading Central Catholic is the only common opponent for the Tide. The Trojans also scored an 11-0 win over RCC.
Gilmer is in his fifth year as Tulpehocken coach.
The team's top player and spark plug is shortstop and leadoff hitter Megan Schneck. Catcher Hilary Faust is a returning all league player.
The circle was shared this season by Jenna Daub and Justine Spatz, both of whom also play the outfield.
The thtird outfielder of note is Sarah Wise.

Tide gets Tulpehocken

The District Three Class AA playoff brackets have been posted.
Tulpehocken finished second in Division IV of the Berks County League with an 8-5 league record and they were 9-8 overall.

Events at Columbia No. 1

The Columbia No. 1 Fire Department will host two upcoming events.
The Lewis and Clark Circus will present two shoes on Wednesday, June 2.
The shows will be at 5 and 7:30 p.m.
The circus will be held at the vacant lot at Second and Bridge streets.

On Saturday, June 19, the department will hold a chicken barbecue at its station, 137 South Front St.
The chickens will be sold starting at 11 a.m.
The cost is $8 for a dinner and $5 for a half chicken.

Another Fourth Friday is upcoming

Fourth Friday is prepared to show it's stuff once again on Friday May 28 from 5-9 p.m.
"The April event brought folks from all over Lancaster county and beyond, and the turnout is slightly better each round. The Fourth Friday event is taking some time to gain the rapid momentum that some expect, but when you consider the quality of the patrons versus the quantity I think we are heading in a positive direction," said Chris Davis of Modest Gallery in the 400 block of Locust Street.

Settlement is Wednesday

At last week's meeting of Columbia Borough Council, it was announced that settlement on selling the borough-owned property at Third and Linden streets would be no later than Wednesday.

Settlement papers are expeected to be signed Wednesday between Columbia Borough, the Columbia Economic Development Corporation and Museum Partners.

Once the papers are signed, work is expected to begin on the Turkey Hill Experience.

Felus is eighth

They didn't have the greatest season in terms of wins and losses, but the Columbia track team did have a place finisher yesterday at the Lancaster-Lebanon League track and field championships.
Senior Brandon Felus placed eighth in the discus, with a toss of more than 125 feet.

The Columbia Football Booster Club will hold a fund-raising car wash at Glatfelter Field on Saturdy, May 22, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
