The softball season for new coach Brad Brubaker got of to a bad start yesterday at Columbia High School as the Crimson Tide lost to District Three Class AA power Upper Dauphin, 12-1, at Glatfelter Field.
"On surface that looks bad. However, it was our first game of the year against a team that has advanced to the last three District Three AA finals and starts seven seniors," Brunbaker said.
"A year ago we lost 14-4 in five innings and had two hits and 11 strikeouts. This year our kids battled very well against a top flight pitcher. We had six hits and only struck out six times," Brubaker said.
Here were the highlights for the Crimson Tide.
* Emily Detz had seven strikeouts and no walks.
* Freshman Ashlyn Phillips went 2-3 with a double.
* Five players registered at least one hit.
"Our thre drag bunters, with whom we have spent a lot time this winter, put the ball in play seven out of eight times at the plate, had a hit, reached on an error and had a sacrifice. Very pleased with that," Brubaker said.
"UDA recorded 13 hits and made us pay for each of our 6 errors. Defense continues to be a concern. We must make the "normal" play, and today we let too many of them get away without an out," the new coach said.
"We move forward and will continue to improve. We won't see the likes of UDA in Section 4," he said.
