Changes on Lancaster Avenue

There are some changes expected for the 1100 block of Lancaster Avenue. The Cycle Den is expanding and Snyder's Market next to the Cycle Den will be moving to a vacant lot across the street.

Question for all you borough council watchdawgs,
is Snyder's Market within code enforcement standards?

Anonymous said...

Did Cycle Den Rick ever pay for the sidewalk and sewer bills that the boro placed a lien on? I am sure Bob Snyder has all the proper permits with labor and industry to have a full time retail buisness. This sound likes a job for the new code enforcement to check this out.

What has Snyder's Market OR The Cycle Den ever do for this Boro? You never hear any of them sponsor or support any projects or groups.

Did this property he is moving to go to Planning or Zoning? Is it zoned to be a business? As far as I knew this was residential. Won't it be dangerous for cars to stop on that side of the road all day, opening doors into high traffic?

Anonymous said...

Let snyder alone he is supporting his family just like we all have too..

Anonymous said...

What has many of the town's buisnesses ever do for the borough?

Anonymous said...

Snyder's a good guy. He certainly isn't getting rich off that place but he's making a go of it and doesn't deserve a reaction like that.

Anonymous said...

Shouldn't we be glad this business is expanding instead of finding fault?

Someboby has to much time on their hands to sit around and bitch about everything that is posted.

because Mr Snyder is a good guy doesn't exempt him from comformance. Norm and Leo are good guys and look at the criticizm fostered upon them. The law is the law and must be upheld, you cannot have it both ways, grant allowance because "he is a good guy" buy enforce the same for a person deemed in your view as not a good guy.

Anonymous said...

A reaction like what? It's not like anyone sugested we tar and feather him. Good guy or not, we all need to follow the rules. Whether they be by the borough, county, state or federal government. That would include L&I too.

The land out in that area was recently resoned to Highway Commercial. Therefore I thing Bob is legel. I would question the safety issue with the parking. There's no place to pull off the Highway. Isn't it odd that Rick (from cycle den)lives nexit door. What goes around comes around.

The people that post on here are heartless. What has snyder ever done you any of you? He still runs a small town business that you don't see often. All you here is we need more businesses in town and now you want to complain about it. Let the man alone.

Bob Snyder is one of the nicest guys in this town. Who could be so small-brained as to be bashing him?

Anonymous said...

Lets move Bob to thr River Park, he could sell bait and tackle along with all the other good stuff you can find at his place of business.

I THINK MR. SNYDER DOES A GREAT SERVICE TO HIS CUSTOMERS. HE HAS RUN A GREAT BUSINESS SINCE HIS DAYS ON LOCUST STREET. I HOPE HIS NEW LOCATION KEEPS HIS BUSINESS GOING FOR YEARS TO COME.

Yea! but Carter's makes the best doughnuts around. Try the sprinkles and then workout and puke! God Bless America. All kidding aside this small town business is doing well. Just don't use the back door.

I am a avid follower of this site and believe that Columbia is not proud-we are just down right ignorant! We complain about all the wrong things and care nothing about the things that do matter! For example, Mr. Snyder greets every passing car as they come into Columbia. How many of you say hello to your neighbor or a visitor of Columbia? Maybe Mr. Snyder doesn't have all his things in order-so, why not help him.... afterall, he is our neighbor...As for the shultz fitness center, how many actually go over there and see for yourself what is in the building? Do any of us go there and support his adventure into securing his way into retirement? I don't know him or his challenges either, but do know he has a rough building to start with... The Landlord and the recent death that occurred there make his challenges all that much harder to begin. I look around this town and see so many unhappy faces, so few friendly voices, so few honest people. No one goes next door to the neighbor for a friendly cup of sugar anymore. What happen to Columbia's pride? what happened to people pulling together and helping one another? If your neighbor has a trash can tipped over by a hungry animal... help put it back, if you see and elderly person who needs help- just help them! As for Leo, Norm and the many more that are on the board-I am sure they are human if they take off their capes! Talk to them as a human. I believe an awful lot of complaining is done on this site, but is rarely done in person. And while I believe that Leo, Norm and the many others need to actually listen, I believe that they have challenges that many of us are not made aware of. If money is an issue, and often it is.. then where they fall short of.. support them. Not financially, but ... If the weeds are an issue, bring your gloves and help out. If everyone who lives in Columbia would list something of a concern-there would be a whole list of chores that would take a very very very long time to fix. As the old saying goes... Rome was not built in a day and neither was Columbia. Nor will Columbia be fixed in one day! BUT IN ONE DAY>>>WE CAN JOIN AND BUILD...and make another day and another day that much more stronger. I live here in Columbia and want to be able to see just why I decided to make Columbia my home. I was downtown on Wednesday just walking. I noticed trash laying in the street. I just visited a store and had a bag in my hand. I picked up the trash and someone actually yelled out the window of their car...Thats what the boro gets paid for?? It was as if they wished I tossed it back down?? Or that it was ok if they drove right pass it?Well its not ok. Its something that didn't break my back. I just helped one street side look better.
This is what I think:
I think that Columbia should have a weekend rally. In that weekend, so many people should be divided for street clean-up, then so many for weeds, then so many for painting and so on. But the idea behind this is to have people who care enough to BE THERE. Not to have the so called Bitch session at Gladfelter, but yet a rally just as you would have for a fundraiser. Then and only then would I suggest having block programs, block captains and when enough has united... have a bike squad. A bike squad would be equipped with vounteers, walkie takie radios and CPR... that would ride the 1 mile area within downtown Columbia to greet visitors, monitor streets that are troubled and report violators such as trouble renters/landlords, abandoned cars or emergency response. These would not take the thunder out of our policing, but yet be a second pair of eyes. I do know that many who read this blog are going to be either a supporter or a hater. The ones that support will understand that it only takes one person to start and take alot to finish and the ones who say..otherwise, will continue to make Columbia a challenge that will never change.

great comments ! - that's the spirt that it's going to take to get things moving and keep it up!!

not sure about the cut on Carters landlord - it's the landlord that gave Carter the opportunity to move his closed business from Park City to Columbia and from what I've heard at a pretty good lease rate along with build to suit renovations. Although far from perfect, at least this landlord is business friendly and willing to give our local entrepreneurs a chance to get started in a difficult town during a difficult economy.

let's put our differences aside and rally for a revival - it may be now or never folks - because the longer we wait the harder it will be. Look at places like Camden NJ - a waterfront town, not far from here and in may ways has a very similar history - used to be booming town close to other larger cities and now half the houses are boarded up and in 2009 it had the highest crime rate of any city in the USA!

this is real stuff and we need to act now to save our town!!

see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camden,_New_Jersey

and you know what? - in 2004 Camden opened an Aquarium with the help of the local non profit development company to help spur the economy - and in 2009 it's still opened while the city of Camden slides to the highest crime rate in the USA! - so don't think for a second that one or two large projects like the Turkey Hill experience will turn Columbia around!!

it's going to take a grass roots effort just like the posts on this blog are talking about and a whole lot of small town spirit and COMMITMENT to sticking with the revival that everyone is talking about -

talk COLUMBIA REVIVAL every day and to everyone - that's exactly what we need and NOW!!!

Come on give it a break. Synder and Rick are probably the two merchants in Columbia with the longest tenure with the exception of Hinkle's. How about going after Mr. "Do-Little" seriously what has he done except empty space in town. What revenue has he generated? Big name slum lord....

First let me respond by saying thank you to those whom have responded to that very long blog entry. I was very serious when I sat down to write that and hope that it opened eyes of everyone. I also want to be clear on the "Cut" on carter. There was no cut on Carter. I clearly said, "Mr. Carter has his challenges due to the landlord, and the recent death that occurred in that building. Each and every one who has a buisness in downtown Columbia will have a challenge to prosper towards retirement if we all continue to sit back and not rally together for unity. I still say the Gladfelter town meeting should be directed towards a solid outcome and not a bitch session. I believe we need to help our neighbor and help the boro to get caught up. I believe we need to show our boro and other neighborhoods that Columbia is in deed proud and we have pride. Negative attitudes need to cease. We need to stop putting our neighbors down and help. As for the slum lords.... they need to have proper procedures to follow and if not, then DON"T ISSUE OPERATING LICENSE TO THEM. I can't make that clear enough. I was very serious about a bike squad and I am very serious about the rally for unity towards a solid town. I don't want to fight this alone... please everyone, hang your anger up and reach out.

I also need to be clear. I have dealt with Mr. Snyder and yes, he is a nice guy, and he has the right to own his own buisness, but with that comes permits, with that comes zoning hearings, variances and moving propane within residential buildings should have been a zoing hearing. This is clearly what Columbia is upset about. This is not only a liability on Mr. Snyder, but could result on a liability on Columbia Boro itself. Proper permits and ordinance needs to be clear. Again, Mr. Snyder just needs help to be on the right path. He does provide a great service to Columbia and has a right to secure his retirement like the rest of us, but the follow through needs to be handled. I am sure Snyder will understand.

Do-Little slum lord? - which one of his properties are you referring to?? - i've heard that his apartments are all pretty nice and almost no section 8

Thought you all would like this information before heading off to the meeting tonight and the one going forward at Gladfelter's...

I am very serious about the rally..to unite-

anonymass - speaking about Mr. Snyder, did you ever hear of the "grandfather clause?" - its a clause that every ordinance has for guys like Mr. Snyder. It's a clause that says if you got away with it long enough then you get to keep getting away with it!! - really - that's what it is!!!! It's a well known term in the real estate business and if you aren't familar with it just google "the grandfather clause"

Mr. Snyder has been doing businss all over Columbia since you were in diapers! - his family had a hardware store on Locust Street many moons ago!! - and then Mr. Snyder moved to his current location where he has been for decades - so he fits right in to the "grandfather clause" and I sure wouldn't want to be the lawyer that tells him that he can't move accross the street!!!

and especially when there is a conspiricy between some local hardware store and the Cycle Den to undermine his propane business!!!!!

so, if you want to pick on someone - pick on the Cycle Den!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Grandpa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
