Other council business

Here are some other things that happened at last night's meeting:
* Todd Kramer questioned the council when two fire damaged buildings on North Second Street at Poplar street might be demolished so he can rent out two buildings he owns near the fire scene.
Borough Manager Norm Meiskey said it won't be long before the buildings will be demolished legally.
* Heather McDonald thanked the council for changing the street sweeping in the 100 block of Locust Street.
She also asked how long vehicles can be parked on properties.
* Frank Doutrich asked why a dead end area of Seventh and Poplar streets was paved and also how many projects are on council's plate to be completed.
* Tabled a maintenance agreement between Columbia, West Hempfield and Wrightsville for the Route 462 Bridge lighting project.
* Approved hiring a part-time janitor for up to 19 hours a week, Anna Gerlitzki voted against the motion.
* Appointed Jonathan Lutz as an alternate member of the Zoning Board.
* Approved a request from the St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church for the use of Makle Park this weekend for a basketball tournament and church service.
* Reappointed Mark Zeamer to the Tree Commission and noted there are vacant seats on the commission, the Planning Commission and the HARB Board for an architect.

What was the answer about the paving on the dead end section of Poplar Street?

code officers MUST concentrate on the downtown area-walk the beat daily. tell people if they don;t clean up and keep it cleaned up they will get a citation and a fine. then do it.

why would the dead end area of 7 th & Poplar be paved ????? i live on the safe routes to school route and our street needs repaved, its horrible. it's destroying my vehicle. so is just about every street in the boro. this makes NO sense. i agree with Frank, - council, & norm spent THOUSANDS of dollars for road equipment. why-they don't use it. maybe they should hire another hand full of laborers for the highway dept. make them temporary-paving season only, no benefits.

It was probably just some extra they had left - just a quick, thin layer poured on to use up what was in the truck. Not like they can put it in a Tupperware container and freeze it...

you all know as well as i do that the streets in this boro are HORRIBLE and they should be one of the most important things on the to do list and at the top of that list. why do we pay thousands of dollars for this equipment and NOT use it? do we need to hire TEMPORARY SUMMER HELP (WITH NO BENEFITS) TO PAVE FOR 6 MONTHS ? i say HIRE A DOZEN. quick. maybe we could get Walnut St and Chestnut St done from 6th to 9th before cold weather sets in...

The answer was given that the road was so bad that it was tearing up the snow plow equipment. Then I heard 2 people were hurt due to stepping in pot holes. I think they should have just filled the pot holes instead of paving the entire surface. This will eventually go to the business at the end as he requested it from council. Council then sent him a letter directing him to meet a few requirements. So they knew this would eventually go to him when he meets those conditions and they paved it anyway.

this is the supid assanine shit the boro ALWAYS DOES!!!! They spent proably a couple thousand dollars of taxpayers money to pave this road for this businessman. well i want my road paved, it's worse than 2 potholes, it's on the safe routes to school and bus route, hell, thousands of people use it daily it;s NOT a dead end. so now, pave walnut and chestnut st from 600 to 900 bks

I also understand the roads are not being paved because the borough can't afford to buy the blacktop. Again, this current council and borough manager (and the mayor after he read his very irresponsible letter monday night) cannot manage our finances. Now Leo is trying to spend $600,000 that we don't even have. How about this concept, PAY SOME LOANS OFF!!!!!!

What the borough is trying to do is piss people off so the borough workers can buy a paveing truck. They dont have much to do now for all the people they have. Add it all up borough workers, and police department and others!! Alot of money there. Tim
