Both police in Columbia and West Hempfield are investigating several home burglaries overnight between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m.
In Columbia, there were break-ins in the area of 13th Street and Central Avenue, 600 block of Union Street and South Fourth Street,
Police said cash was taken in the Columbia break-ins and people were in the home in two of the three break-ins.
In West Hempfield, a Samsung-Galax was taken during a break-in in the 600 block of South 16th Street, while they are also investigating a report where someone attempted to break into a home on Froelich Avenue in Mountville.
Police are asking residents to keep their doors and windows locked and if possible put on an outside light and report anyone unfamiliar in their neighborhoods to police, who feel it might be some young person looking for money to possibly purchase drugs.

Update on Turkey Hill robbery
POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A ROBBERY THAT TOOK PLACE AT THE TURKEY HILL STORE, 342 CHESTNUT ST., ABOUT 12:08 A.M., JULY 18.
SUBJECTS WORE DARK CLOTHING AND BASEBALL CAPS.
ONE SUBJECT PULLED A GUN FROM HIS WAIST BAND AND DEMANDED ALL THE MONEY FROM THE REGISTER. THEY ALSO TOOK A DISPLAY SHELF CONTAINING SINGLE PACKS OF NEWPORT 100 CIGARETTES.

Police seek help in copper thefts
Columbia Police are seeking help in solving a number of copper thefts from churches and homes in the borough.
Thefts are copper down and rain spouts.
Police said they have received reports of people checking out vacant homes, breaking into them to steal copper pipes from outside air conditioners.
If you see someone that does not belong in your area, call police at 684-7735 or 911.
There were also reports of a white truck seen in the area of the thefts.

Official release on car break-ins
On 5-9-11, the Columbia Police Department received numerous calls from residents regarding their vehicles being entered and items being taken.
A number of different items were taken from the vehicles, including but not limited to a GPS unit, bookbags, and a Beretta .32 caliber pistol. Many of the vehicles that were entered were unlocked, however, at least one vehicle was locked, and the perpetrators forcibly entered the locked vehicle by breaking a window. These thefts occurred during the overnight hours, and were not limited to a specific area of Columbia.
The Columbia Police are actively investigating these thefts and are speaking to potential witnesses.
The Columbia Police wish to remind its residents that it is of paramount importance to ensure that all unattended vehicles are locked, even if the vehicles are parked in a private driveway. The Columbia Police also recommend removing valuables from vehicles when they are parked. However, if valuables are left in vehicles, it is wise to secure the items and keep them from plain view.
Anyone with information about these thefts is to contact Sgt. Marc Tremblay or Officer Troy Engle at 717-684-7735.

Fire leads to pot find
A passerby noticed a second-floor window sill was on fire, and summoned the Fire Department. Columbia Police responded to the address along with Columbia Fire Departments to assist with traffic control and possible evacuation of neighboring buildings.
While Fire personnel were inside the building, they noticed multiple building code violations. As such, Fire personnel summoned Columbia Police personnel inside for further investigation. Police made contact with the building owner and occupants, and explained that Columbia Borough Code Officer Jeff Helm would be responding to the building for further inspection. After notifying the owner of this, Police continued coordinating Helm's response with the Fire Department. Unbeknownst to Police, the building owner and its occupants left the scene after being advised of this, and could not be located.
As the Fire Department personnel continued to check the building for the presence of fire, they discovered a marijuana grow operation being conducted on the third and fourth floors of the residence. Police were summoned to this area of the building, and found approximately 10-12 pounds of loose harvested marijuana in bags, and approximately 60-70 mature marijuana plants being grown. This area was immediately secured for investigation. Due to the nature and severity of the code violations throughout the building, it was condemned through the Columbia Borough Codes Office.
Police were able to identify the building owner and its occupants before they left the scene, and all belong to the same family. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

Curfew is still enforced
Columbia Police are reminding parents that even though school is not in session, they are still enforcing curfew laws.
A 16-year-old boy as chagred twice at 1:25 a.,m., June 17 for curfew violations. One at Fifth and Mill streets and again at Third and Cherry streets.
The borough's curfew ordinance takes effect Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday nights at 11 p.m. for the entire year.

Lock your vehicles
Columbia Police are asking people to lock their vehicles and not leave anything of value in them.
Recently police have received a number of reports of vehicle break-ins in all areas of the town.
Police said there have been 15 reports in the last two weeks in the area of South 13th Street.
Police are asking residents if they do leave something in their vehicle, not to leave it in view of someone walking past the vehicle, who could look in and steal it.
