Millersburg at Columbia: Tide's playoff history

While Millersburg, the Tide's Class A playoff opponent has done well over the last five seasons in the District 3 playoffs, the same can't be said for the Tide.

The Tide, who will host a playoff game for the third time, is making its 17th playoff appearance, but hasn't won a game since beating Holy Name, 48-7. They've six lost straight Class A games, the longest current Class A streak in District 3 and eight overall. The other two were Class AA losses to Delone Catholic, 27-26, at home, in 2007 and to Trinity, 56-12 in 2006.

In addition to hosting Delone Catholic in 2007, the Tide also hosted Camp Hill in 2002 and lost to the Lions, 19-8.

That win over Holy Name at Lebanon propelled the Tide into the finals where they were beaten by Camp Hill, 13-6 in the finals in a game played at West York.

The Tide has been to the District 3 championship game three times, losing to Camp Hill, 32-6 in 1988 and in 2001. Columbia won a district title, beating Hanover, 19-8, in a game played at Middletown in 1995.

The Tide's first appearance in the playoffs was in 1985, at Dallastown, when the Tide lost to Hanover, 34-27.

Millersburg at Columbia: Indians are playoff tested

The Indians of Millersburg, who will travel about two hours to get to Columbia for Friday's District 3 Class A football playoff game (7 p.m. Kick), are no strangers to playoff success.

Cole Boyer
Out of the Twin Valley/Tri-Valley League, the Indians have enjoyed success in the playoffs.

The Indians, who lost in the finals last year, under current coach Steve Boyer, to Holy Name, 27-20, have played in the finals every year since 2006. They won a district title, beating league rival Upper Dauphin, 15-12 in 2009, In the semi-finals that year, Millersburg under then coach Roy Wall, stunned Steel-High in the semi-finals, 14-13. Wall is now the coach at Northern Lebanon.

Overall in 15 games, Millersburg is 9-6, with three of those losses to the Rollers.

The Indians, who are playing Columbia for the first time, have just five seniors on their roster.

Josh Howard
Leading the way for the Indians is quarterback/defensive back Josh Howard, a junior. Howard through 10 games has completed 41 of 91 passes for 582 yards. He's been picked off nine times and thrown six touchdown passes. The biggest impact Howard will have is running the football. He's the leading rusher with 831 yards on 193 attempts and has scored 14 rushing touchdowns.

Other big ball carriers are Travis Lamereaux, also a junior, who has rushed for 724 yards on 111 carries and Cole Boyer, a senior, with 193 yards. For the season, Millersburg has rushed for 1,940 yards in 10 games.

Travis Lamereaux
Howard's favorite receiver is Boyer with 12 catches and senior Christian Wenner with nine catches. Boyer and Lamereaux each have caught two touchdowns.

Millersburg runs similar schemes on offense and defense like Northern Lebanon.

Defensively, the top tackler with 93 stops is junior linebacker Dawson Schlegel, followed by Lamereaux, who doubles as a linebacker with 72 and another linebacker Connor Keim with 55 stops. Keim is a freshman.

On special teams, Blake Wood has kicked 17 PATs; Decker Klawitter leads the Indians in kick returns, while Lamereaux handles the punting and punt returns.

What I've learned and what I want to do

Well, its been an interesting week to say the least. From getting out to the polls, waiting for the results, accepting congratulations through e-mail, Facebook and in person, I'm still very humbled and wanting to thank those who voted for me and tell everyone how honored I am to represent our great town for the next four years

As I have promised, I will work in the best interests of all 10,300 people of our fine town and work hard to improve this town. I know there are plenty of issues expressed to me during the campaign, with two of the biggest being code enforcement and parking.

Going back a step, one of the most surprising phone calls I got since Tuesday was yesterday from County Commissioner Craig Lehman. I was very surprised and had a nice talk about with the commissioner.

So what have I learned this week. There is a lot of work to do. I also learned that a local businessman wants an ordinance governing Pawn Shops that have popped up in the borough. His business was ripped off, he said, by one of those Pawn Shops and hopefully that, the theft can be settled through the legal system. I did read somewhere that Pawn Shops were discussed at the committee level.

Also learned there was a meeting at Our Lady of the Angels School held last week to discuss plans to go from two school buildings – the former St. Peter's and Holy Trinity, down to one building, at the Holy Trinity building. Costs and a decline in enrollment are factors. Here's something for those involved, which was brought to my attention yesterday. Since it looks like the St. Peter's building might be the one vacant, why not donate it to the Community Life Network, so there could be a year round shelter for the homeless, which appears to be a growing problem in our town.

Other than that, I have talked with a number of people, setting up meetings, with elected leaders and others, to discuss what has been done, can be done and will be done. I got plenty of questions too and ideas, which I will keep everyone updated on through COLUMBIA TALK.

Feel free to talk to me anytime, give me your suggestions and ideas. Get into the habit of attending meetings and becoming involved.

One thing I will ask, in addition to asking questions, give me and the council some solutions of how to address different issues. It's the only way I know how we can improve things in Columbia.

Again, thanks for your vote and I will work hard for you.

Beware of phone scam

Columbia Police are asking residents to be aware of a phone scam targeting possibly older residents.

Police said they received a report late last week from an elderly woman, who received a telephone call stating she won $2.5 million.

Police said the caller had an old address for the woman and had called her twice. She was instructed to send $350 through UPS and when the caller persisted, the victim asked a few questions and was hung up on.

Police said they looked into the two phone numbers but they did not lead anywhere.

Anyone who may have received similar phone calls is asked to call police at 684-7735.
