Columbia announces sports hall of fame inductees

Columbia High School will hold its fourth annual Athletic Hall of Fame inductions on Friday, Sept. 9 when the Crimson Tide hosts Northeastern.
A reception will be held in the cafeteria prior to the game and the inductees willl be official enshrined at halftime of the game.
The lone team to be inducted is the 1970 football team, which went 10-0 and was known as the Big Red Machine.
Only only two teams came within a touchdown of defeating the Tide,
Jack Yohe, the coach, received Coach of the Year honors.
Scored 369 points while holding their opponents to 69 points.
Eighteen different played from the team received either first team, second team or honorable mention All-County status. Co-captain Steve Ward and Jessel Hollingsworth were also awarded All-State honors.
For the 16 seniors on the team, their three-year record was 26-3-1.
Aaron Anspach was six time letter winner in football and wrestling.
During his three years as a starter, the football team compiled a record of 19-4. The team was 11-1 in his senior year (he was team co-captain) and won the Section Three Championship and were District runners-up. Aaron was named to the All-League team in 2000 and 2001. He was second team All-State as a defensive end in 2001.Aaron spent five years wrestling for the Tide. As a Junior he had a record of 35-9 and he won the Sectional and League Championships as a heavyweight. He finished eighth in the State Tournament that year. As a Senior, Aaron was 39-1and won Sectional, League and Regional Championships. He was second in the State meet, losing in overtime in his final match. His wrestling prowess won him a scholarship to Penn State.
Lamar Kauffman won seven varsity letters at CHS for football, basketball and track.
In football, he was quarterback and safety on the 1954 and ’55 Conference of Roses championship teams. The team was 18-2 during those seasons. He was named to the all-county team in 1955.
He was a three-year starter for the basketball team. The team was 45-11 during those years. The ’54 team captured Section I and Lancaster County Championships. He wasteam captain in 1955 and was named first team all-county.
His 1954 and ’55 track squads won District titles. He threw javelin and competed in the pole vault.
After college, he returned to CHS as a teacher and coach of both football and basketball.
Donald Schoelkopf won eight varsity letters (2 basketball, 3 football, 3 track)
He was the Single season passing yardage record holder – 1803 yards – 1985. 1856 yards in 1986. and Single season TD record – 20 in 1986 and was first team all-section quarterback in 1986.
He is the current school record holder for javelin – 200’2” and in 1984 – 5th place District 3 AA javelin and in 1985 – 1st place District 3 AA javelin; 5th place in states and in 1986 – Lancaster-Lebanon League champ, 1st place District 3 AA javelin; 3rd place states
Glenn Von Stetten won three varsity letters in each of three sports – football, basketball and track.
He co-captained the 1943 and ’44 football teams. The team was the Lancaster County Champs in 1943. Glenn was All-County 1st team in 1942, ’43 and ’44. The 1941 team, of which he was a member, was undefeated.
His 1945 basketball team won the Lancaster County championship. He was named to the All-County team and was named to the 2nd team All-State that year.

Burke commits to Villanova

Columbia football standout Michael Burke IV has given a verbal commitment to Villanova University to continue his football career following graduation in June.
Villanova is a member of the Football Championship Sub Division, formerly Division 1-AA, is considering a move up the ladder to Division I and would play in the Big East.
Villanova was the FCS National Champion in 2009 and lost in the semifinals last year.
Notable  football alums are Howie Long and Brian Westbrook.

Is this laziness or too convenient?

Was minding my own business when I was downtown Saturday morning when I noticed this Locust Street trash can filled up with someone's personal trash. Probably wouldn't have noticed it, if the trash was down in the bottom of the can.
This is a continuing problem for Columbia and not only downtown. One, people don't have trash haulers and use the downtown cans as their own trash removal system. Two, most of the problem are in rental areas where there are dumpsters, but those renters don't use them because they are in the rear of their rental unit. I also know of some businesses, who have dumpsters, who lock the because of people using them to dump their trash.
I know when found, the Code Enforcement Office has gone through the trash seeking names and addresses.

Not real safe

Here's a surprise for everyone.

Last Wednesday, one of those big trucks that rumble through our downtown took out a wire and damaged a couple of lights at the intersection of Third and Locust streets.
Oh yeah, we don't need a truck route. More on that later.
In the aftermath of the cleanup, I was informed that this pole, pictured, is a nice safety factor. The larger pole was installed about two weeks ago and the old pole, the short one, was sawed off at the bottom and left hanging not real securely to the new pole.
I was told that borough officials notified the proper utility but not much was done,. I wouldn't recommend parking in the area, which is in front of the old flower shop, until its corrected.

No excuse for not updating more

If anyone is wondering why there haven't been more updates on this site, because, yes there is a lot happening in our town, there's no good reason I can give the good folks of Columbia, other than it being hot.
I was involved in a couple of research-type projects -- one to get nominations for the Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame and another researching the number of games played since 1898 by the Crimson Tide in football.
In my way of thinking, neither went the way I expected. More on that in the coming days/weeks.
I also catalogued the thousands of sports cards I have (MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL and the dreaded NASCAR) and I am looking to unload them. Most are from the mid to late 1980s into the high 1990s. More on that later as well.
Other than it being super hot, the words just weren't flowing like normal. I even sat outside the other night and put the words to paper, but not paper to computer.
Well, I got plenty of information to pass along, so stay tuned.

Police seek robber

West Hempfield Township Police are seeking help in finding the person who robbed the Sleep Inn in the 300 block of Primrose Lane, July 17.
Police said the tall, thinly built white male with a clean shaven head, was armed with a hand gun got away with an undetermined amount of cash.

Mail boxes and cars damaged

On the morning of July 26, West Hempfield Police received numerous reports of mail boxes and cars being damaged in the 100 blk of Ruby St and 1st blk of Pearl St - Mountville.

In all, (6) mail boxes were smashed and (2) vehicles had smashed windows.

Three charged in road rage

 Police received a report of a Reckless Driver / Road Rage incident with a possibility of shots being fired, along Route 462 exiting Mountville Borough at 9:21 p.m., July 25.
Police located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it, but it fled. The vehicle eventually pulled into a private driveway on Gasper Lane with one of the suspects fleeing on foot. He was located  one mile from the stop and surrendered without incident.
The victim alleged; a road rage incident took place along Route 462 in Mountville. At some point, the victims vehicles was struck and damaged by a flying object from one of the suspects. After the incident was reported, Sgt. Coyle observed the vehicle along 462 and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled. Police were able to locate and arrest all involved once the vehicle pulled into a private driveway on Gasper Lane. Police located various possessions inside the vehicle to include a pistol, electronic equipment and controlled substances. Police further learned the vehicle was earlier reported stolen to East Hempfield Township Police.
All three suspects were charged and committed to Lancaster County Prison. Charges are as follows:
Edward Charles: RSP (F-3), Criminal Conspiracy (F-3), DUI (M), Fleeing & Eluding (F-3) and V.C.S.D.D.C.A. (M).
Kyle Hlubny: RSP (F-3), Criminal Conspiracy (F-3), V.C.S.D.D.C.A. (M), Underage Drinking (S).
Kurt Farmer: RSP (F-3), Criminal Conspiracy (F-3), V.C.S.D.D.C.A. (M), Underage Drinking (S) and Propulsion of Missiles into an occupied Vehicle or Highway (M-2).
West Hempfield Police were assisted by: Columbia Boro PD, Manor Twp PD and East Hempfield Twp PD.

Burglary/drug arrest

Kenneth R. Lightcap Jr., 23, of 255 N. Third St., Columbia, has been charged with stealing $1,300 worth of old coins overnight July 12 from Toll Booth Antiques Center, 215 Chestnut St.
He then used the coins at area businesses. Lightcap was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia for a smoking device found during a search of his home.

West Hempfield Township police reports

A home owner in the 300 block of South Manor Strret, Mountville, reported to Police, sometime overnight, July 21, an unknown person forced entry into his garage, but appears nothing was taken.


Police responded to an alarm at the Getty Mart in the 300 block of Highland Drive.
Upon their arrival, they discovered, glass to the front door smashed in. Police further learned, the stores cash register which contained an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
Police search the area, but no one was found.

Police were called to the 3300 blk Poplar Drive, July 24, as it was reported, the home owner observed a: white male, tall, teens to 20's, enter his garage and remove a bicycle. The home owner followed after the suspect until the suspect ditched the bike in a nearby housing development and fled on foot. Police checked the area, but no one was located.

More vehicles broken into

Between the dates ofJuly21 and 23, West Hempfield Police investigated approx five (5) theft from vehicle complaints. All vehicles were unlocked. Items taken ranged from: cash, coins, pocket books, stereo equipment and a Beretta .45 cal pistol.

Locations were: (2 incidents) 100 blk Broad St - Salunga, 1700 blk Cedar Springs Rd, 500 blk Goldfinch Dr, 100 blk Main St Salunga.

Police seek missing person

West Hempfield Township Police are asking for the public’s assistance in a missing person’s investigation.

Police identified the missing person as Kathleen M. CONNOLLY.
Connolly is described as a white
female, 24 years of age, 5’7” tall, weighing approx. 175 lbs. She has blue eyes and sandy colored hair.
Police indicated that Connolly had moved from New York earlier in the year and was employed by QVC
Warehouse. She was last seen sometime between July 7th and July 9th. Connolly is described as being a
caring mother; however she left behind her 2 children who are currently with their father in New York.
Additionally, she has not been in contact with any family members or friends. She is also described as a
dedicated employee however she has not been to work since July 7th. Connolly’s vehicle and her belongings remain at her home.
West Hempfield Township Police are being assisted by Lancaster County Detectives Office/Lancaster County District Attorney’s as well as the Pennsylvania State Police and the New York State Police.

West Hempfield PD investigate car break-ins

In the past two days, West Hempfield Police has received a rash of Vehicle Break in's through out the Township and Mountville Borough. In most, the victim's vehicles were left UNLOCKED and valuables left in plain view.
Below is a list of dates and locations incidents have taken place:
7/19/11: 700 blk Daniel Circle, 700 blk Chickies Dr, 4600 blk Klinesville Rd
7/20/11: (3 incidents on) 3600 blk Falcon Ct, 1st blk W. Main St Mountville, 3600 blk Wildflower Dr,
1200 blk Corporate Blvd.
Items taken range from: GPS units, various electronic charging devices, cash / coins, cameras, pocket books, IPods and cell phones.
Two vehicles had windows smashed for entry in this latest bout of thefts, as nine (9) vehicles in all were entered.
On 7/20/11 in the 3900 blk of Continental Dr, a work shed was forced open and a Cub Cadet tractor valued at $600was stolen.
Once again, Police urge residents to lock their cars and not to leave valuables inside. Turn on outside lights,and strange nighttime noises should be reported to Police at the time they are heard as with strange vehicles or persons in your neighborhood.

National Night Out

West Hempfield Township Police will be joining cities nationwide for “America’s Night Out Against Crime”. The police department will be hosting a kick-off event on Sunday, July 31, at the Mountville Borough Community Park between 5-8 p.m. Personnel and equipment from all of the emergency services will be on hand so that the public can have the opportunity to see their vehicles and equipment. Scheduled to be on hand are the police departments from West Hempfield Township, Columbia Borough, and East Hempfield Township along with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit. The Sheriff’s Department will also be giving demonstrations.

Other emergency services that will be in attendance include fire companies from Mountville Borough, West Hempfield, Susquehanna Valley Emergency Medical Services; Lancaster County Parks bike patrol; and Lancaster County Fireman’s Association smoke house.
"This will be a great opportunity for the public to come out and see what emergency services in our area have to offer.” stated Chief Mark Pugliese. “They will be able to go through vehicles, look at equipment and talk to all of the emergency responders. Last year was our first National Night Out event and thanks to the community as well as all of our emergency service providers it was a huge success. We are looking forward to this year’s event.
The police department will then be encouraging everyone to take part in America’s Night Out Against Crime which will be taking place on Tuesday, Aug. 2, which is when neighborhoods throughout West Hempfield Township and Mountville Borough are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 28th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the West Hempfield Township Police Department will involve over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 37 million people are expected to participate. National Night Out is being supported in part by Target, a national corporate sponsor.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten Crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 7 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 2, residents in neighborhoods throughout Mountville Borough, West Hempfield Township and across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with their neighbors

ONE SUBJECT PULLED A GUN FROM HIS WAIST BAND AND DEMANDED ALL THE MONEY FROM THE REGISTER. THEY ALSO TOOK A DISPLAY SHELF CONTAINING SINGLE PACKS OF NEWPORT 100 CIGARETTES.
