Well, if you have been downtown recently and parked at the meters, you've probably noticed Columbia is enforcing the meter laws to a T. Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m.to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
You've probably been one of those ticketed.
Well, get ready for another change in the very near future.
Once the meters are cleaned, calibrated and signs changed, it will cost you more to park.
Now, with the exception of an area near the post office, it costs 25 cents to park for an hour. Once the above changes are made, it will cost 25 cents to park for 30 minutes.
Council members Mary Barninger and Anna Gerlitzki voted against the change.

Seems like whenever I go downtown, the majority of the metered spaces are vacant. But I'm sure this will help....heck, why not $1 an hour? $5?

This seems like a very hipocritical move on the borough's part. We keep hearing...."We want to bring people into our town." But what you are really saying is "We want you to come to our town and see what we have to offer...but it's gonna cost you."
WHAT'S THE PROBLEM??? MOST PLACES YOU ONLY GET 15 MINUTES FOR YOUR QUARTER. IT IS STILL A CHEAP TO COME TO COLUMBIA.
Are we really #$@!@#$ about 50 cents an hour ?!?!? Bringing people to town IS about revenue...period. Well...guess I won't be able to get my hair cut at Shupp's any more. I can't afford the extra quarter!
So why not raise it and make it a dollar an hour? 2? If it's about revenue, charge $5 an hour. Let's go all out and charge $20 an hour. And give lots of tickets! That will keep people coming back! Ever since they raised it to a quarter, either (a) no one is parking at the meters, or (b) no one pays. I mean, the laws of supply and demand still apply, even in this borough.
Mt. Joy doesn't charge for parking at their town square. The meter readers can just as easily enforce time limits as meters...
PS. I went to the daily grind and parked on the 600 block of Locust St. 50 more cents I had to spend at a Columbia business.

I agree with Tom, stop playing footsie over peanuts - take it to a quarter for fifteen minutes just like every other town!, why do we think that we can pay our employees good wages and have cheap parking! - a quarter for fifteen minutes is only a dollar an hour!, whoppie doo - and drop the restriction on hours - at a buck an hour let people plug five hours if they want, lot's of poeple will plug a few hours and only use one - go for it!!! - and stop playing footsie with much needed revenue
