Earth Day celebration is Saturday

The sixth annual free celebration of Earth Day will be held at Frank Sahd Salvage Center’s facility in Columbia on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The family-friendly event will showcase dozens of local organizations and their green innovations. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn money for themselves and their churches by recycling aluminum cans and other metals.

Children may enroll in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Passport program, a program where they will play games and answer environment-related trivia questions at vendor booths. Children who complete the booklet will receive a free treat. The event will also feature a children’s activity area with environmentally themed crafts, face painting, and a recycled fitness course.

New this year, Lancaster County Master Gardener Scott Davis will share composting tips and host a composting workshop at 11 a.m. Attendees must preregister for the workshop by emailing tim@recycleyourmetal.com .

More than 25 local businesses and community organizations will participate, and a food waste recycling company will be among the new exhibitors this year. Tours of the salvage center’s facility will take place at 9:45, 10:45, and 11:45 a.m. In addition, visitors will be given the opportunity to melt metal and create pendants from their own molds. In addition, there will be hands-on exhibits focusing on wind and solar energy, as well as many other green activities.

Everyone who brings aluminum cans in during the event will be given a special Earth Day price for their cans and will be entered into a random drawing for a $50 prize. In addition, the individual or organization that brings in the most cans will receive a $100 prize.

Local churches may also benefit from metal recycling on Earth Day. Anyone who registers their church on Sahd Salvage's website at www.recycleyourmetal.com before Earth Day will not only receive money for their metal, but their churches will also receive 10 percent of their total receipts that day. The program will continue through May, as Sahd's will donate 5 percent of all parishioners' receipts to the registered church of their choice.

Goodwill Industries will also participate in this year's event and will collect clothing and other useable goods. Shred-It will also shred two bags or boxes of paper, free of charge. An area radio station will broadcast the Kids Cookie Break Show live. Various food offerings and bake sale itesm will available to benefit the Columbia Food Bank.
