Don't the Columbia Zoning Hearing Board will hold a meeting next Wednesday at 7 p.m. to discuss a request from David Doolittle to construct a hotel and restaurant at 400 Locust Street.
Also included on the request is to add 404 Locust Street to the restaurant and hotel.

July 21, 6:30 p,m., borough council will hold a special meeting to discuss its Act 537, whichif approved will increase sewer rates up to 70 percent.

Including 404 Locust, just as I figured. Hope the mold problem is cleaned up first before people are expected to pay to sleep or eat there.

70 percent of a increase in sewer rates I hope not! I am so upset paying for water that doesn't even go down the sewer. Watering plants, water doesn't go down the sewer. How many more vacant homes are there going to be before there is no Columbia. Same way with School Taxes. How many kids that graduate from Columbia stay here? Now no other district wants to combine with us. All the original home owners and the true Columbians are being forced to pay because they stayed here and bought homes. A lot of Seniors in this town. I watch weeds grow, doors hanging open, windows open and trash from outsiders who get help to have their utilities being paid through Pa. Welfare and waste it. 70 percent is a lot to put on a senior or fixed income with people being laid off.

Sounds like all he wants is the opportunity to drop another building like he is actually going to pursue something just to have the building gone for whatever reason. Sounds familiar.

70% increase in sewer rates? Sell the sewer plant to LASA! Why is our tiny community carrying around this burden?

why does the zoning code allow 90' tall buildings in the downtown? - go figure, with nine foot ceilings that would be ten stories!

why is the sewer company and the water company seperate? - talk about a waste of human resources! - think about it? - the sewer company sends out bills based on water usage - duh!! - two sets of books and two offices with two sets of staff and overhead to send out billing based on the same dang thing!!

Outsource the billing and do it quarterly. Cut down on staff, salaries and benefits. Oh that's right! Is it because there are too many rental properties with high turn-over of tenants so we couldn't have quarterly billing? Could never keep track of who owes what if these landlords would have tenants in and out every month! Then again, since probably half the rentals are Section 8, is the government paying the sewer and water bill anyway? Let's all get to this meeting! No one can afford this....and shouldn't have to. We provide water to other municipalities and THEY don't even pay near what we pay....

Folks, if you remember in January 2007 our sewer rates were increased by 20% to pay for these upgrades they knew were coming. Then in February 2008 they were increase again by another 20%. Where is ALL of that money we have been paying up early? Now with this 60% increase our rates have doubled in less than 4 years. Who can afford to live here anymore?

Its a shame that Doolittle is allowed to purchase or manage any more properties in Columbia? It appears that he has his hands in almost every unsuccessful attempt to spend Boroughs tax dollars and patience. For years the borough has allowed him to do pretty much everything that runs our town down. While I believe he has good ideas-its appears he tells the borough one idea then when the borough agrees, he changes his mind t osave abuck in his pocket ..and we all suffer with yet another bad write off. I still say, Columbia is and can always be a great town to live, work or play, but if we continue to close our eyes to the people who just "TALK", then Columbia is giving us what they think we deserve. .......
