More of is this we want in our town?

The Scoop Mobile "mobile newsroom" was out and about today taking pictures of various problem areas. Also had a big discussion about other areas of town, who need to be visited by Code Enforcement. The suggestion was to print the phone number of the Code Enforcement Office here (684-2467, ext. 215) and contact them with complaints and continue to contact them until something is done or go to borough council after a couple of calls. One of the big problems, which is all over town, are weeds growing up through curbs and sidewalks and how unsightly it is. This picture is from downtown, where it is particularly bad in some areas. It doesn't look nicewith the car show and craft show coming up, which will bring thousands of people to our town. The other picture is of another downtown property where someone forgot to remove their beer bottle and 12-pack on Locust Streeet. The third picture is one in the eastern end of town, where the grass hasn't been mowed in a number of weeks and is more thn three foot tall. Also received word of a property near Front Street that has black mold growing in the basement and the landlord isn;t doing anything. If you know of problem areas, problem properties, let the "mobile newsroom" know or send us a picture and we will post it in an attempt to clean up our town.

Not more mold in Columbia! The Historical Society should have a contact number to give that landlord.

The only time Borough Council and the Code Office takes this seriously is when there is an event coming up. Once a month the Police department and Codes working together, need to concentrate on areas and cite them until the matter is taken care of. The city does this in a joint venture. (Police/Codes) Citations should be given with out allowing time to clean up.

It seems Code Enforcement is usually aimed at homeowners and not renters or landlords. A homeowner can have a minor violation and the Code Department is all over it yet renters and landlords can have major violations with no action. What is up with that?

My daughter has a disabilty and is living in the basement of an apartment building,of course the landlord is out of town and can't be reached. Everytime it rains her apartment (if thats what you want to call it) floods. She has thrown out clothes, blankets, the place is full of mold,it,s everywhere. She has tried to clean it up with bleach, but it doesn't help. She doesn't want to live there any more,it's a shame people on disabilty are treated this way.The dumpster near her apt.,when it rains the maggots come out and make way to her place it's disgusting. Where is the help for people in the same,or like living spaces. This is AMERICA .

Wow...This is America....so move! I am not defending the landlord if this post is accurate. there are plenty of places in Columbia and the surrounding townships that are subsidized and handicap accessible, sounds like it is time to do a little research and move on!

Speaking of moving on. That is exactly what the current "code" officials for the borough should do. What exactly are they getting paid to do? I would like to see them take the "landlords" with them too. There are some good ones in town and then there are the pathetic bunch that rape one old building to put what they need in another building. Oh by the way, take a look at the hole in the ground next to Burning Bridges. If you aren't familiar with the winner responsible for that and a lot of other screw ups in town do some research. Now that is a track record people. Ever see the landlords that carry pistols when they collect rent? That is an indication of where things are at as well. Thanks Barry.
