A bit of history

Michael Burke III became the seventh Columbia High School football coach since 1925 to win their first game as head coach.
The others were Mike Burke II, 1985, over Elizabethtown, 21-20; Jason Shoff, 2004, 25-13 over Eastern; Jack Yohe, 1963, 7-0 over Wilson; Boyd Sponaugle, 1941 over the Patton School, 33-0; Charles Spangler, 1936, 19-0 over Susquehanna Township and Irv Keener, 1926, 14-0 over Lititz.
Coaches not winning their first game were Joe Horn (1983 to Hempfield); Les Schoelkoph (1976 to Hempfield); Elmer Kreiser (1958 to Manheim Central); Tom Donan (1950 to Lancaster Catholic); "Whitey" Pew (1945 to Ephrata); Harry Langford (1943 to Lancaster Catholic); Woody Sponaugle (1938 to Lancaster Catholic) and Sam Angle (1927 to Reading).
