Seems to be a growing trend across the state: http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2010/10/west_shore_school_district_deb.html

And what happens to the student who would like to play but cannot afford to?

Pay to play isn't a bad idea. If it were to go through I would feel that there would have to be tryouts and coaches would need to make cuts. This of course would have to be done before the parents would pay their money. Parents would have to understand that their children wouldn't be playing all the time though. I feel the best thing to do in these tough times would be to merge. A lot of people are against that and it might be out of the question now since columbia has added on and donegal is set to build. I just think a merge between donegal and columbia would benefit. Every student and the taxpayers of both school districts. Everybody likes to use what about columbia pride it will be gone. Pride I something nobody can every take away from somebody besides every once in awhile you have to swallow your pride!

Just to add for those kids who make it and don't have the money to pay to play why not have them work it off after school or during the summer. This would pay their fee and possibly give them community service hours for graduation.

In my opinion merging with Donegal was a no-brainer. Therefore it went no where! What a hugwe missed opportunity to improve things tremendously for both the students and taxpayers!!
