Remove those chairs

Columbia Borough has issued a warning for those who have out chairs, tables, trash cans, etc. out to save parking spaces from the snow a few weeks back. The public works department will be going around town removing the items.

says who - Leo ??? Norm ??? if people weren't so IGNORANT AND if they HAD A LITTLE COMMON DECENCY PLUS if they weren't soooooooo LAZY.............WELL,
you mean to tell me that the highway dept doesn't have anything of importance to do with our taxpayer money !?!?!?!?!?!? UNBELIEVEABLE...

Anonymous said...

what ?????
wow, this is important. the boro has the audacity to waste my taxpaying money having the highway crew ride around and pick up chairs, etc. are you nuts ??????? THEN I SUGGEST, THE BORO ISSUE PARKING PERMITS............AS BROKE AS THE BORO IS I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY THEY DON'T SELL PARKING PERMITS, IT'S RIDICULOUS. I HAVE TO PAY THE TAXES ON MY PROPERTY, I HAVE TO REPAIR OR REPLACE MY SIDEWALK AND CURB AND I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR GUTTER AREA BUT BUT BUT - let me get this right, i can not park in front of my property????????????? why???????i have to pay for all the upkeep and taxes. and you wonder why people are leaving the boro ???? it is NOT a freindly place to live.

to the IDIOT who is so worried about a chair reserving my hard earned, shoveled out parking space - that i pay exorbitant taxes on --
GET A FREAKING LIFE !!!!!!!
why don't you worry about the homeless that wonder our streets???? or the young children who go to bed hungry every night ??? or the elderly who have no one to help them up when they fall ??? YOU ARE TRULY AN IGNORANT INDIVIDUAL...

Anonymous said...

WHAT - YOU HAVE GOT TO KIDDING ME --- I DO NOT PAY TAXES FOR SUCH BULL -----.
MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. THE HIGHWAY DEPT HAS OTHER THINGS TO DO.

Why not make all the apartment houses have private parking and we would not have to worry about spots. They do not want to shovel a parking spot but they want to park in your spot. One apartment building in town has 6 - 8 cars to 1 house and NOT one of them shoveled a spot for their cars. So get on these slum lords and we would not have problems.

Anonymous said...

I agree, it is time for the chairs to go, and I have no problem with the street department doing it. I can understand saving your spot after a major snow storm but there comes a time when it is no longer reasonable to continue saving it. There must be eight to ten "space savers" in my block alone. Most of the snow is gone or nearly gone so there is no need to save spaces any longer.

Anonymous said...

YEAH....get rid of the garbage and the people who like garbage in the street !!!

Anonymous said...

if you don't like it - DON'T LOOK AT IT !!!!
if the Boro would sell parking permits, we WOULD NOT HAVE TO RESERVE OUR SHOVELED OUT SPACES. how hard is it ????????

Tom said...

Again -

even if there was parking permits, you are not guaranteed a space. Most places that I can think of (mostly college towns near here) have general parking zones. So someone else with a parking permit can still park on the public street in front of your home.

Sucks, but that is what happens when you turn single homes built before the era of the automobile into multi-resident apartments.

Anonymous said...

This entire "parking permit" idea has me puzzled. Just where would these parking permits apply, just downtown or all over town. Imagine having permit parking all over town. The cost of the signs would be outrageous and think of the time and cost to enforce them. Guess that it why you do not see them except in the most largest cities, and then, only where they are needed. Just sounds like a stupid idea with very little thought put into it.

By the way, if you park in the spot I shoveled, unless it is for a short period of time, shortly after it snowed, expect to see me shoveling your car back in.

chairs are a tradition and we're all about tradition. my parents did it and my grandparents did it. that gives me grandfather clause to shovel my spot and block it with pops chair if i want to - and not you or the powers that be are going to ever be able to stop this gold old tradition, just face it.

Anonymous said...

hello=is anyone home? i'm talking homeowners-parking permits WOULD be for 1 space in FRONT OF THE PROPERTY 24/7 !!!!!! now, how hard is that ??? and the poor boro would make money on it. a no brainer.

Anonymous said...

if you lived in my neighborhood, you'd be upset too. i spent hours shoveling out a spot and the LAZY neighbors take it AS SOON AS I PULL OUT...it's bull----. FOR THE AMOUNT OF TAXES WE PAY IN THIS BORO - THE PARKING SPACE IN FRONT OF OUR PROPERTY SHOULD COME WITH THE PROPERTY....

Anonymous said...

this is a sore subject and one that should be taken seriously and something should be done about it. if this boro wasn';t full of lazy, ignorant, people with no common sense and no respect for anyone - even the elderly or the sickly or the handicapped. it's ridiculous. and to the personS who complain - DON'T LOOK AT THE STUFF. this town is NOT what it used to be. what a shame. IT'S TIME TO RUN ALL THESE TRANSIENTS OUT OF TOWN AND SLAM THE DOOR SHUT .......

Anonymous said...

after they do the parking spots, why not have someone fix the burned out street lights,3rd street at stovers,200 block walnut,400 block locust, etc,or wait for a few muggings to happen first.

Anonymous said...

sorry-don't look at it....
this is everywhere, in lots of small times, we are landlocked, each house or dwelling can have 4 or 5 cars (or more). back in the day, each household only had 1 car and therefore, parked in front of the property that they pay to upkeep, it only makes sense. it's temporary.
i for one, will be furious if the highway dept uses MY TAXPAYING money to have the workers collecting chairs, cans, etc.......
you who holler the loudest are most likely one of the lazy ones who steals everybodys shoveled out space.

Anonymous said...

a neighbor (a few years back) got irritated because one of these lazy people took their parking space after they shoveled out (2 feet of snow). guess what?????? the 3 brothers shoveled the vehcile back in !!!!! priceless !!!!!!!! serves em right.

Anonymous said...

people, you know, there a whole lot more important things to worry about and waste time and money on other than people taking care of their own.....i think its way overdue. we need to take back our town. this is ridiculous, a total waste of OUR TAXPAYER MONEY, and guess what, it doesn't hurt the lazy no goods who go all around town stealing peoples shoveled out spaces. TOTAL LACK OF RESPECT. TOTAL LACK OF COMMON SENSE AND COMMON DECENCY AND COURTESY.

Anonymous said...

Barry, can you tell me why the street lights on the 200 block of locust street and third street are out!! Its been 3 weeks now! Thank you! robert

"you who holler the loudest are most likely one of the lazy ones who steals everybodys (SIC) shoveled out space. "

Nope. I shoveled the equivalent of 5 spaces the last snow. 2 for my trucks, 1 for another car, 1 for a spare, and the amount of space between the aforementioned spaces probably equals one additional space. Granted I didn't shovel out too much under my slightly larger truck, but it's the thought that counts.

I pay taxes too. I have two trucks - both properly registered and insured. If you want your own private reserved space, then buy a house with a driveway/garage/parking spot. Or move to a neighborhood that isn't jammed pack with row homes and multifamily apartments. Why do you feel the need to have your own piece of the public street for your car? Lancaster has permit parking - but it is not space-specific. Could you even imagine the logistics behind a system like that?

Anonymous said...

it's the principal of the matter. and the reality of it too. the homeowner is respoinsible for thesidewalk and the curb and half way into the street at his/her property. SO IT ONLY IS FAIR AND RIGHT AND MAKES COMMON SENSE THAT THE SPACE IN FRONT OF THIS PROPERTY IS FOR THE HOMEOWNER WHO HAS TO PAY FOR THE UPKEEP AND AGAIN FOR THE exorbitant taxes.....1 space at the property is SMALL (A PEA) IN THE SCHEME OF THINGS (when compared to the amount of taxes we pay).....and you wonder why homeowners aremoving out. we can't afford it and the boro is TOO IGNORANT TO EVEN CARE. AS LONG AS THEY HAVE FREE REINS TO OUR MONEY TO SPEND,spend, spend.

Anonymous said...

what about ALL these rental properties that are grandfathered in ?????? the boro can certainly change the ordinance. the majority of these rentals don NOT have off street parking and so they have 4, 5 6 or more cars parking on the st. and guess what???? these renters
do NOT pay $ 5, 000 in taxes a year. and they deserve this-why?????
no, i don't think so. it's time to take back this town. we as taxpayers SHOULD HAVE some fair treatment.

I just bought my first home in Columbia this summer. It is a row home. I never even got the chance to park infront of my house because I worked til five and came home to have a chair infront of my house. The people next to me rent and they are who put the chair there. It hasn't moved since. I had to shovel out three spots since then because I refuse to put a chair out. It's not fair! If everyone would just shovel out a spot and park ONE of the many cars infront of their home everyone would have a spot to come home too. But that isn't the case and I'm sick of walking a block to my home to have a rental continue to park there.

Interesting...lancaster news ran a story about the city ordering chairs to be removed this morning. I understand the parking problems caused by snow but let's not act like we are the victims of some huge injustice, or that somehow this only happens here and that our officials are somehow wasting our money. Afterall, the reason for bringing in the chairs is to make snow removal easier and lord knows we are all throw our hands up and scream about plowing every time it snows.

Anonymous said...

Wow, this town is filled with pissed off people. It is a real shame we/most are adults and we act like this. I too, feel it is a RESPECT issue that most will never learn. Shame on us all... shame

Anonymous said...

exactly-it is a serious respect issue-plus common courtesy, etc. like another said-if each person whovels one spot in front of their house to park in it wouldn't be an issue....but the issue is, everybody has 2,3,4 or more cars and THE LAZY, IGNORANT MORONS WANT TO PARK ALL 4 CARS OUT IN FRONT-IN FRONT OF EACH NEIGHBORS AND MAYBE ONE ACROSS THE STREET.....USE YOUR GARAGE OR OFF STREET PARKING.....or-park all the other cars a block or 2 away. i have one neighbor who ALWAYS parks a block away-because there's extra parking there......i also will NEVER PARK IN FRONT OF ANY AND ALL ELDERLY NEIGHBORS HOUSES-now, that is a serious respect issue......shame on you.

Anonymous said...

thats bull crap in lancaster - its still winter and he who shovels his spot can keep it till spring - chairs are ok till at least march - and whoever moves a chair should be fined for stealing a chair

Anonymous said...

all parking spots should be deeded and sold to the adjoining property and that way the property owners can pay for the maintainance on half the roads

Anonymous said...

chairs do NOT need to be removed for snow removal and there is NO snow to be removed ! wow.
as i've said numerous times, the parking space infront of each homeowners property should be a part of the property and for the property owner not the lazy neighbor (who has 4 cars). the property owner MUST pay taxes on this, the taxpaying homeowner is RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL UPKEEP ON THE SIDEWALK AND CURB AREA AND HALFWAY TO THE STREET -SO THEREFORE-IT SHOULD BE THE HOMEOWNERS !!!!!!!! how hard is it ???? if i pay the exorbitant taxes on this property (almost
$ 5,000 PER year -the least theboro could do is adjust the ordinance that states that the space is for the owner of said property. (It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure it out!)

Anonymous said...

you know what really blows me away ???? all becauseof some ignorant, nothing to do nosy busybody, there is a lot of time and effort wasted on this.
i am NOT staying in this TOWN and paying these HIGH taxes for the highway dept OR the police to REMOVE CHAIRS, TABLES, CANS, ETC.......
there are MANY IMPORTANT ITEMS THAT NEED THE ATTENTION OF ALL THESE - HIGHWAY HAS potholes to fill, roads to fix, signs to put up, etc,etc and the police are NOT paid their salary to remove a chair from a parking space.....this is 100 % RIDICULOUS, TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, AND THIS BORO COUNCIL BETTER START DOING THEIR JOBS....
boro council is the BOSS of norm and leo. now, let's get with the program and do what you should be doing, what you were elected to do-which was not to give these 2 free reins to everything like they're some kind of kingsh---

Anonymous said...

Why doesnt the Borough remove the snow on street sweeping days and ticket who ever is parked there that would be logical.

Anonymous said...

logical???? do you have more money than brains???who is going to pay for that-the taxpayers are already taxed to death and can not afford anything else in this boro. do NOT LOOK AT THE CHAIRS=THATS EVEN MORE LOGICAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I see that people that live in the 100 block of S. 4th Street must not have seen the notice...I counted 14 chairs there around noon today in that block alone! Now don't get me wrong, I myself use a chair to save my spot, but it was removed at least over a week ago....those chairs are basically sitting on bare streets now...thats a little ridiculous

Anonymous said...

amen. but again. the parking space in FRONT OF THE PROPERTY I LIVE IN AND PAY TAXES ON SHOULD BELONG ONLY TO THIS PROPERTY. amen. problem solved. won't cost a penny. (unless your neighbor parks there-then you just pick up the phone and call the towing co to come get it!!!! and they have to pay to get thier car

Anonymous said...

i'll tell you the shame of it all. the hardworking homeowner/taxpayer who is trying to keep their head above water. the VERY LEAST the boro SHOULD DO is make an ordinance that the parking space in FRONT Of THE PROPERTY IS FOR THE PROPERTY OWNER ONLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the boro wastes thousands of dollars on stupid ordinances about nothing. this is a problem everywhere in town and something must be done. this is the one thing that makes total sense.

the other thing is that ALL RENTAL PROPERTIES MUST HAVE OFF STREET PARKING -SO IF THAT REQUIRES USING THE YARD-SO BE IT !!!!! MAKE THAT AN ORDINANCE TOO. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT AS USUAL THE SLUMLORDS ARE THE ONES WHO GET CATERED TOO IN THIS TOWN. NOW, TELL ME, WHAT 'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE????????

Anonymous said...

People just need to have consideration and respect for others and the spaces they shoveled. But that will NEVER happen..

So riddle me this. You want the homeowner to OWN the spot. OK, what happens if a utility company needs to perform work under the street? What happens when the street needs repaired? I guess the homeowner would be responsible for the pavement. Have you priced asphalt lately?

Or do you expect the borough to repair your property for free (or on the backs of the taxpayers)? Maybe the borough should put the parking spaces up for bid. Maximum profit that way. Of course you may be outbid and have to park 4 blocks away, but it would make great financial sense.

nj said...

solution, all apply for physical handicap signs in front of your house, I did and have no parking problems

Anonymous said...

that's dirty and low and lacks respect for those who are truly handicapped

Tom said...

And if your neighbor has a handicapped placard, he can park in that spot as well.

Anonymous said...

Lazy is already the problem.....
reminder boro council mtg is monday at 7

st said...

yes that is true Tom, but if my neighbor has a handicap placard why would he want to park in my spot? It is not disrespectiful for those truly handicapped only disrespecttiful to those with a placard who aren't handicapped, know anyone like that? Soon the snow season will be over what will you bitch about then?

I live on a block where on the other side of the street six houses and there are 14 cars for those six houses. Two of the cars are never moved, so it is not good. There are also cars parked on the block who live on another street, where there is plenty of parking. I agree with the one post, when a large majority of our streets were constructed, people didn't have two or even three cars. As for the rental units, they shouldn't be grandfathered. They all should have off-street parking and are the lazy ones, who are bums, don't work, use their welfare money to purchase cigs, lottery tickets and booze. And as far as the borough's request, its an ordinance and it is time. But then again, since we have selective enforcement, not surprised by this.

Anonymous said...

yeah park spaces required for rentals would be nice, problem is our apts next door have 2 in the back yard and they never use them. So who is gonna enforce the tenants to actually use them?

"COLUMBIA BORO HAS ISSUED A WARNING"
where ????????? no one saw or heard about the warning except reading it here ????
the taxpaying homeowners are also issuing a warning - to the powers that be - you better wake up before its too late - this is going to be a "ghost town" after we all move out.....
the taxes are so high we can NOT afford to live...AND
the SLUM LANDLORDS ARE TREATED BETTER THAN ANY OF US TAXPAYING HOMEOWNERS............why ???????
THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCAPTABLE AND YOU BETTER REALIZE IT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

I saw 3 police cruisers at a house in the 100 block of South 4th Street on Friday afternoon - a few doors down towards Union St. a person pulled out of their parking spot, got out and placed a chair in his spot - clearly in view of the police officer(s). So apparently this is all a big joke because everyone knows the police won't enforce it. I was appalled he did it in plain view of the cruisers.
