Help is needed

Columbia No. 1 photo
The help of the community is needed following a devastating fire Sunday afternoon in the borough.
The home of Mike and Carmen Swinehart at Front and Water streets (near Blue Lane) was destroyed in what went from a chimney fire to a house fire around 1:47 p.m.
Firemen from all three Columbia fire companies, along with numerous mutual aid companies responded and were on the scene for several hours.
A state police fire marshal said the cause of the fire is accidental and places damages at $80,000.
A drive to help the Swinehart's replace clothing, furniture, etc. is currently under way. Interested parties can drop off donations at Columbia Discount Computers, 23 North Fourth St. through Friday and monetary donations can be dropped off at the Susquehanna Bank in the 300 block of Locust Street as part of a Community Life Catastrophe Fund in the Swinehart's name.

I heard that their son who is 12 years old would like the support of the fire department(s) to start a service called "HURT". Stands for Helping U Recover Thoroughly! He and his mother/father would like to get a jacket like the fire department but have HURT stamped on it and when there is a fire, they would like to go as a volunteer and help them through the process. They will be on the scene to call family members, red cross, find shelter for pets, provide gas cards, food voucher and so on. This is there way of helping back their community. They want to show them there is help out there and walk them through the process., but most importantly they want to be on the scene to CALM THE HURT DOWN! If you can imagine for the victims it is hard to watch your home go and take alot of memories with it. I ask that someone notify the paper, the news or whatever it takes to get this special 12 year old wish out to the public. I am going to do my part by supporting this little boy who came up with a wonderful idea. It shows that he is not selfish,but blessed to be alive. I imagine that the program would have to start by the boro, the fire departments and the police recognizing such a volunteer as a family and provide them with a jacket as a support. Then the community as a whole would have to donate. For example: if you own a hotel-spare a one night for the victims of a fire, if you own a grocery store or food establishment- spare a meal, clothing etc. My fellow members of Columbia, please help this boy make his wish come true. If you connections, please do so. This family is living in a hotel and living off of fast food. If you time to make a meal- call them. I saw the number listed as 629-8924 on a window. These people lost alot. I write this because when I was a little boy, I lost a mother and a brother to a fire. The pieces afterwards was not easy and the memories will never be forgotten. Stanley

Dear People of Columbia,

As many of you have heard Carmen Swinehart, Mike Swinehart, and there son Nick's house burnt down yesterday. I had the opportunity to walk through it today, and was horrified to see what I saw. It was pretty much gutted out in the living room and kitchen! These wonderful hard working people have lost everything! Christmas presents, cloths, furnishings, Microwave oven, ect. It is up to us as a community to pull together and help them out. Many of you are curious as to how you can help so here is the information! If you want to donate cash, or check please go down to Susquehanna Bank, and write a check out to the;

Community Life Network Catastrophe Fire Fund - Please make a note on your check that it is for the SWINEHART FAMILY!!! So the funds can be disbursed properly.
