Light project moves forward

Perhaps sometime later this year, once all the T's are crossed and the I's are dotted, the lights that adorn the Veteran's Memorial Bridge will get restored.
At Monday's borough council meeting, Columbia approved an intergovernmental cooperation agreement between Wrightsville, West Hempfield Township and PennDOT, to allow the restoration of the bridge lights to move forward.
Columbia was the last to approve the agreement in which Rivertownes PA USA has plans to replace the current lights on the bridge with historic lights that were on the bridge when it first opened.
Mayor Leo Lutz said the project got a boost Monday afternoon when the Lancaster County Transportation
Technical Advisory Committee gave its approval for the $1.2 million project and another county group is expected to give its stamp of approval tomorrow.
"The project will be fully funded and it might bre able to begin this year," Lutz said.
Council thanked Rivertownes President Dr. Claire Storm for her effort in getting this project off the ground.

This is a colossal waste of money. I think the project has merit and would be great if the times were different, but the fact is the infrastructure of many municipalities throughout the state are aging and failing. I would sooner see this money be used to upgrade sewer lines, repair roads, etc., then putting up pretty lights.

I must agree. While allthough much needed, i wonder how much the "authentic/reproduction/period" light fixtures added to the cost versus a PennDOT approved fixture. Grant money, as well as money from jobs being completed under budget, still is taxpayer money and needs to be managed wisely. Hopefully, this will be all the lighting that the bridge receives.....

While it is being looked at as a restoration I believe the lights that will be installed are LED's. This would be a significant energy savings and thus cost savings for those involved as well as improving the appearance of this great bridge.

I do not refute that going with LED fixtures are absolutely the way to go in this application. But to be optomistic or even try to convince people that the cost savings are that dramatic enough to recoup the initial investment is absurd. Especially when figuring in the overall life expectancy of the infrastructure(poles, wiring, etc) themselves. I just think a more economical "style" fixture could have been aquired that would have looked better than what is there and striking a better financial balance between need and want.

1.2 million for lights on the bridge - you got to be kidding !!

we better bring the toll road back!!

for 1.2 million - we could build a ferris wheel with lights and income producing rides!!

Sooner pay $1.2 Million for lights on the Bridge were everyone will get use out of them.
Not $7.5 Million for a river park that you can not do anything at. ( SORRY )
