National Night Out

West Hempfield Township Police will be joining cities nationwide for “America’s Night Out Against Crime”. The police department will be hosting a kick-off event on Sunday, July 31, at the Mountville Borough Community Park between 5-8 p.m. Personnel and equipment from all of the emergency services will be on hand so that the public can have the opportunity to see their vehicles and equipment. Scheduled to be on hand are the police departments from West Hempfield Township, Columbia Borough, and East Hempfield Township along with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit. The Sheriff’s Department will also be giving demonstrations.
Other emergency services that will be in attendance include fire companies from Mountville Borough, West Hempfield, Susquehanna Valley Emergency Medical Services; Lancaster County Parks bike patrol; and Lancaster County Fireman’s Association smoke house.
"This will be a great opportunity for the public to come out and see what emergency services in our area have to offer.” stated Chief Mark Pugliese. “They will be able to go through vehicles, look at equipment and talk to all of the emergency responders. Last year was our first National Night Out event and thanks to the community as well as all of our emergency service providers it was a huge success. We are looking forward to this year’s event.
The police department will then be encouraging everyone to take part in America’s Night Out Against Crime which will be taking place on Tuesday, Aug. 2, which is when neighborhoods throughout West Hempfield Township and Mountville Borough are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 28th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the West Hempfield Township Police Department will involve over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 37 million people are expected to participate. National Night Out is being supported in part by Target, a national corporate sponsor.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten Crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 7 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 2, residents in neighborhoods throughout Mountville Borough, West Hempfield Township and across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with their neighbors
Questions may be directed to Chief Mark Pugliese or Officer Bart Hollis at 285-5191.

Barry,

As a person running for Council would you not ask yourself this question: Why doesn't Columbia have this program? We are donating our resources to other communities instead of investing in where it matters most Columbia. Why do we even have a Mayor?

Columbia did participate in the program for a few years when John George was police chief. Hasn't been done since. I think its a good program to participate in and knowing Chief Brommer, its something he will look into. Right now, there appears to be a lot to be done on the police side. He recently started getting the officers back in schools, which hadn't been done in a few years. I will ask though.

don't know who JN is don't care, but why not attend council meetings and ask the questions you pose on this blog?

You and your readers should be aware that Columbia has been holding Night's Out for the past couple of years. The event is called Night Watch. The first this year was held on June 25, 2011 and another will be held in August. The event is headquartered at the former Mennonite Mission on South 4th Street and moves to various parts of town. This years event was posted in church bulletins and was announced at the June Borough Council Meeting. For more information residents can contact Pastor Hub Smith. By the way, the Mayor was in attendance and the Police Department has been involved since the beginning.

Again we have a person sounding off when they don't have the facts. My suggestion would be to attend council meetings to be kept informed. Blind critism is something we can do w/out and it sure does make the originator of the "sound off" a continued part of the problem.

As a former employee in law enforcement (Now retired) National Night Out is a commmunity based program ran by your local Police department. Praises to Pastor Hub Smith for doing what he does. As for the writers above, sounds as though you take my postings personal. Years ago everybody had their lights turned on and sitting on porches. We were informed by the newspapers or TV stations releasing new bulletins. How many block watch programs do we have? This is the job of our elected officials to sustain these programs. One problem I see is riding around this town (any part) and I bet you will see how much this community has changed its culture. The quality of life in this town is suffering. Don't believe it just open your eyes. A good start is Jack Brommer taking the lead of a police department that is capable of doing great things. One very good example of cleaning this town up is enforcing the Codes. In addition to that drafting codes that have teeth. I'm not all negative but sometimes it takes one to start the ball rolling in the right direction. Mr. Ford when you get on Council please look at these issues very seriously and do something. There are a lot of great things happening to Columbia but a few blight areas can take the wind out of a sail.

The individual above presents some very good points. I don't see where he or she is being negative at all. Certain indivduals just don't want to hear the truth. I'm not at all sure who is runing for Council but we do need some fresh eyes on Council. Good luck there Mr. Ford.

i agree. as a taxpayer, i have to say that looking at some of these slums around town - some on the 200 block locust st, the filth on the 400 block union st, etc. something MUST BE DONE.....this is ridiculous. where r the codes people? they hired how many more officers??? WHY DO WE NOT SEE THEM WALKING THE BEAT, ESPECIALLY THE DOWNTOWN AREA that's for all to see and then ALL THE SLUMS.......it's hard to stay positive, when you see this EVERY SINGLE DAY.
